Proper implant position and angulation contributes to the successful implant-supported restoration. The fabrication of a radiographic and surgical guide prior to surgery may result in a more predictable implant placement.1,2 A traditional method for fabricating surgical guides using irreversible hydrocolloid was introduced by Tarlow.1 Although this method is commonly used in the laboratory, irreversible hydrocolloid is an unstable material if not handled properly. Thus, this method may be limited to fabricating surgical guides.
Vinyl polysiloxane (VPS) has been used in the fabrication of removable partial dentures,3 complete dentures,4 and implant prostheses.5 This article describes a simple, yet versatile VPS putty matrix technique for fabricating a radiographic/surgical guide for implant placement. Although VPS is a more costly material, it has some advantages over the traditional irreversible hydrocolloid fabrication method. For example, VPS may be used to duplicate the denture and, subsequently, to serve as a tooth position index,5 as well as to assess the available space for implant placement.6
