University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry
The University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry is located on the Health Sciences Center campus in Oklahoma City just east of Lincoln Boulevard at Stanton L. Young Boulevard (12th St.). It is one of the newer dental schools in the country. The first dental hygiene class graduated in 1972 and the first dental class in 1976. The present clinical sciences building was dedicated in 1976. The primary mission of the College is the education of highly competent dental professionals. From the very beginning, the faculty, programs, and facilities emphasized clinical dentistry. While research and scholarly activity have grown over the years, clinical dentistry remains the strength in both the educational and patient care arenas.
Graduate or residency programs are offered in the disciplines of Orthodontics, Periodontics, Oral Surgery, and General Dentistry. All the programs except dental hygiene are unique to the state.
The College currently accepts 54 dental students into each class of its four year DDS program and 24 students into the 2+2 dental hygiene program. The graduate and residency programs enroll the following numbers of students annually: Orthodontic, 4; Periodontics, 2; Oral Surgery, 2; and General Dentistry, 5 or 6. More information on these programs can be found under the heading "Academic Programs."
Patient care is an extremely important part of the educational mission of the College. Over 60,000 patient visits occur annually. Additional information is located under "Patient Information and Services."
The College is particularly proud of its relationship to the practicing community. Alumni and dental professionals in all disciplines contribute to the College as part time faculty and provide important input into almost every aspect of the College's operations and educational programs. Likewise, many faculty and staff are very active in the Oklahoma Dental Association, the Oklahoma Dental Foundation, and other dentally related organizations. The financial contributions of faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from the entire professional community have helped the College maintain a level of excellence that would not have been possible from state appropriations alone.
