University of Newcastle Dental Sciences
Newcastle has a long and distinguished history of dental research and our standing as an international centre of excellence is reflected in the Grade 5 we achieved in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (Press Release). Six of our staff have received awards from the International Association of Dental Research in recent years - a record that has not been exceeded by any other dental school worldwide.
We focus our efforts on four Research Groups, each led by an established researcher of international standing. The Groups bring together staff with related research interests and expertise in order to provide mutual support in the carrying out of research and providing research training. We have strong links with other disciplines within the University and the NHS to support our research, as well as extensive international collaboration.
The Groups are:
Dental Biomaterials
Effectiveness of Oral Care
Nutrition & Oral Health
Oral Microbiology & Host Responses
These are exciting and challenging times for dentistry. We now know that much of dental disease can be prevented and we have at our disposal a wide array of techniques to alleviate pain and treat disease. The need for further improvements stimulates further research into better ways of preventing and treating dental disease and has also led us to develop new teaching methods for the dental student of today.
At Newcastle we are meeting these challenges with undergraduate and postgraduate courses designed to provide both the scientific background and the practical skills needed to make the best use of new materials and put into practice the most up-to-date advances in dentistry. Our strong research programme has an international reputation and contributes both to our basic understanding of oral diseases and to applied aspects of their prevention and treatment.
