University of Nebraska Medical Center - College of Dentistry
Now in its second century, the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry has a proud history of providing exceptional dental education and service to the community of Lincoln, the state of Nebraska, and the Great Plains region.
The College offers training in the D.D.S. program, a B.S. degree in dental hygiene, and postgraduate training in the dental specialties of endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics, as well as a general practice residency. Our D.D.S. classes typically have 45 students and dental hygiene classes 24 students (20 in Lincoln and 4 in Scottsbluff-Gering). The relatively small class size fosters close interaction among our students and between students and faculty. More than 60 dedicated full-time faculty are involved in our educational and research programs. The UNMC College of Dentistry provides a strong clinical education based on sound scientific research.
Because the College is located on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and is affiliated with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, we enjoy the benefits of both campuses and are involved in both communities. Whether you are a prospective student, a patient, a dental or dental hygiene practitioner, or you are just interested in the College, we invite you to explore our Web site.
Research is an integral part of the College of DentistryǃÙs mission and the College has experienced substantial growth in its research enterprise since the opening of the Cruzan Center for Dental Research in 1998. College of Dentistry (COD) faculty research is primarily supported by the National Institutes of Health. Private industry and foundations represent other funding sources. Major research focus areas include biomaterials, cellular signaling in cancer, neurosciences, and novel pharmaceutical methods to augment bone growth in the oral cavity. We invite you to learn more about the COD research program by exploring this website.
Traditionally, the UNMC College of Dentistry has had a small, but active, student research program. Our emphasis has been on a "quality, not quantity" research environment for student research. In essence, we may not have a lot of students conducting research, but the ones who are conducting research are conducting high- quality research. Nonetheless, by the time any particular dental class graduates, on average approximately 15-20% of its students will have had a formal research experience that includes personal mentoring on a research project of interest. Many students who have availed themselves of a formal student research experience have gone on to enroll in residency programs.
