University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry
The UMKC School of Dentistry is part of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), which is part of the University of Missouri system of four publicly funded state universities. The other schools are located in Rolla, St. Louis, and Columbia.
The School of Dentistry is situated a few miles north of the UMKC campus, atop Hospital Hill --a historic area of Kansas City, so-named because it is a nexus of health care and educational institutions. The School is surrounded by prestigious neighbors, including the UMKC Schools of Medicine and Nursing, ChildrenǃÙs Mercy Hospital, Truman Medical Center, and several other private and public medical facilities. Students profit from the opportunity of learning, working, and interacting with scholars, researchers, and professionals in many related areas of health care.
The UMKC School of Dentistry originated in 1881 as the Kansas City Dental College. The name has changed and the school has grown and evolved into a multi-faceted institution, but it has maintained a tradition of excellence in education for over a century. The School offers a varied and complete range of educational experiences for students of dentistry and dental hygiene and for graduate and continuing education students. The first-rate faculty is comprised of scholars, scientists, and specialists, all dedicated to providing a quality and comprehensive education, individualized to each studentǃÙs needs and goals. The School is also a model for technologically advanced administrative offices, instructional settings, and clinical facilities.
Over the last decade, the research funds awarded to the UMKC School of Dentistry have increased ten-fold. This is because commercial and government organizations are attracted by the human and technological resources available at the School. The increase in funds is directly related to the dental schoolǃÙs standing in the scientific community. The School is known and recognized for its state-of-the-art facilities, testing/evaluation center, and talented, knowledgeable researchers.
The School prioritizes research, and it is part of its mission to lead the country in developing new concepts and new techniques in oral health. To stay on the forefront, the School is committed to continually upgrading its science laboratories, as well as retaining and attracting top researchers in the field. In addition, the School offers several Academic Programs designed to encourage todayǃÙs students to become tomorrowǃÙs researchers.
Today, and throughout the past, UMKC has benefited from the patronage of prominent sponsors for its research projects, including: National Institutes of Health, ALZA Corporation, U.S Department of Health and Human Services, University of Missouri Research Board, American Foundation for AIDS Research, Procter & Gamble, BruxCare, Astra Pharmaceuticals, Block Drug, Oral-B-Braun, OraPharma, Bausch & Lomb and Calla-tec.
