About the School
The Mission of the School of Dental Science is to be a world-class, research-based school, offering education of the highest quality and to play a leading national and international role with particular relevance to the Asia - Pacific region.
In recent years, the school has attracted more research funding than any other dental school in Australia and in 2003-4 established a Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Health Science and the Victorian Centre for Oral Health Science. The school has a major commitment to undergraduate dental education and the training of dental therapists and dental hygienists. It is at the forefront of graduate dental education and has Australia's largest postgraduate program. It also offers a variety of exciting and valuable continuing professional development programs for dental practitioners. The diverse range of Australian and international students from many social and ethnic backgrounds provides a stimulating intellectual environment which enhances the learning experience for all students at the school.
The School of Dental Science has a strong tradition in dental research and an established international reputation in several research areas. Research in the school is an integral component of staff and student activities underpinning both the undergraduate and graduate curricula. The major research activities of the school are conducted by four major research groups which cover a vast area of scientific research from basic science to clinical studies and involve a range of scientific disciplines.
The School provides a stimulating and challenging intellectual environment at the forefront of biomedical research with state-of-the-art technologies and international collaborations.
Restorative Dentistry
Undergraduate:
The Restorative Dentistry Section is responsible for teaching of dental materials science, pre-clinical operative dentistry, removable prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, general practice, integrated dental practice, implant dentistry and occlusion in the BDSc course.
Postgraduate:
Restorative Dentistry staff have responsibility for postgraduate programs in prosthodontics and in endodontics, leading to the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DCD) and specialist registration with Australian dental boards. Section staff are also responsible for administration and teaching in the Diploma of Clinical Dentistry and the Diploma of Implant Dentistry programs.
Research Activities:
Section staff have has research interests in clinical and laboratory aspects of dental materials; adhesion; tooth and bone biomechanics; implant dentistry
