University of Manchester - School of Dentistry - UK
Manchester is one of the very best Dental Schools in the UK being rated as the finest dental teaching establishment by the Guardian newspaper. The strength of our teaching programme was also recognised by the latest government review into teaching led by the Quality Assurance Agency. We were awarded maximum points (24 out of 24) with special commendation for our quality of student support and guidance, IT infrastructure and support and the use of problem based and student centred learning.
In research we are presently graded as grade 4 (out of 5) by the Research Assessment Exercise signifying that our research is of the very highest standard in up to half of our submitted areas. We have a reputation for excellence in orthodontics, dental public health, genetics and biomaterials.
These are exciting times for the University, and the Dental School, with the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology to form the largest University in the UK (www.manchester.ac.uk.), from September 2004. Being part of the new, and visionary organisation will create an environment of limitless possibilities in teaching and research We This development will ensure that our students and staff benefit from being part of a world class institution.
The School is somewhat unusual for UK Dental Schools in that we are situated on the bustling University Campus which is close to the centre of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the UK, with extensive cultural, social and sporting opportunities.
Research in the Dental School is co-ordinated by the Research Committee chaired by Professor Kevin OǃÙBrien. It is carried out in two main themes, each has its own academic leader. These are Basic Dental Science and Evidenced Based Care. Each theme is divided into two main teams; Basic Dental Science is divided into the Craniofacial and Adhesive Biomaterials and Biomechanics teams. Evidence Based Care is divided into Health Services Research and Pain and Injury Research teams.
