University of Kentucky College of Dentistry
Founded in 1962, the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry is recognized as one of the nation's outstanding dental institutions. In addition to the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, the College offers postdoctoral programs in six fields of study: General Practice Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orofacial Pain, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Periodontics. Graduate students in Orofacial Pain, Orthodontics and Periodontics receive a Master of Science degree from the University of Kentucky Graduate School and a specialty certificate.
The College has a national and international reputation for its dynamic and innovative approaches to dental education. Approximately 200 doctoral students and 30 graduate students and residents are enrolled. In addition, 56 full-time faculty provide an excellent student/faculty ratio and promote a very supportive atmosphere. Doctoral and postdoctoral student dentists are treated with respect and as colleagues. The University of Kentucky emphasizes an environment of collegiality between faculty and students to create a unique educational setting that promotes learning. The College is committed to providing its students with superior programs that prepare them to deliver competent care to patients throughout the Commonwealth and the nation.
From its beginnings, our College has been acknowledged nationally and internationally as a College of distinction. What makes the UK College of Dentistry outstanding? While I could respond with an array of unique qualities, one characteristic always assumes a position of preeminence . . . our commitment to students and to their development as professionals. Kentucky's vanguard always has been its orientation to students.
We are a student-centered College. Our reason for existence is to enable students to become extraordinary practitioners of dentistry; to work with them in developing their full potential intellectually, clinically, interpersonally, creatively, and morally. As a College, we continuously reaffirm that this is why we are here and what we are about.
Our philosophy of education is simple and direct: facilitating student learning. As a faculty, we seek to model a love of learning and a spirit of inquiry appropriate for students to inculcate into their professional value system. From matriculation, UK's student dentists are accepted as colleagues in the profession and are respected as such. Only in a climate where human individuality and autonomy are respected can real professional education exist. Dentistry, society, and the world will change; our commitment to students has not and will not.
