University of Alabama School of Dentistry
The University of Alabama School of Dentistry, a unit of the Medical Center of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was created by an act of the state legislature in 1945, the same year that the School of Medicine moved to Birmingham from the university campus in Tuscaloosa and became a four-year school. The School of Dentistry admitted its first class of students in October 1948. Since that time it has gained a national reputation for excellence. In addition to its first professional degree (D.M.D.) program, the school offers accredited postdoctoral programs in twelve areas of study. The development of "four-handed dentistry" and the expanded utilization of trained auxiliary personnel were pioneered at this institution.
The University of Alabama School of Dentistry (UASOD) has established a student and faculty exchange program with the schools of dentistry of Meikai and Asahi Universities in Japan. The exchange program allows students and faculty from each school to observe clinical techniques, research programs, and physical facilities at their host institution. Close interaction between individual students and faculty provides an excellent opportunity for learning and cultural exchange. A group of approximately 5 dental students and 1 faculty member from each Japanese university is expected to visit the School of Dentistry for ten days each year. The UASOD will also be sending a group of students to visit Meikai and/or Asahi each year. During its short tenure, this program has become very popular with students and faculty from all three schools.
