Question
The past few days my seasonal allergies have been bad...I have noticed electric shock type sensations in my bottom 3-4 teeth towards the front, or like you are getting cold air on your teeth...I cant pinpoint a tooth...I just had a deep cleaning and scaling a month ago with 5-6 injections of novacaine on each quad...This sensation comes and goes....
Someone had mentioned it could be a damaged nerve due to the novacaine..
I called my dentist for an appt and the hygenist said that allergies can make all your teeth hurt..Is this true?
I was also reading about pre trigeminal neuralgia..I do clench my teeth at nite also, and off and on have ear and face pain, and I think I possibly might have TMJ...I see nothing wrong in the area that is bothering me...The teeth and gums look fine, no swelling, decay, abcess, etc..
Thanks!
Nancy

Answer
Nancy - Seasonal allergies do influence the sensation of teeth, but only the upper teeth that are close to and often touch the maxillary sinuses. As far as sensation of the lower front teeth, allergy is not causing the problem.

So what then is causing your pain. As you described, you do clench and clenching, especially with not a perfect bite can cause tooth sensitivity. As far as the damaged nerve from novocaine, there would not have been a lapse of time between the novocaine injections and the development of these symptoms.

My suggestion is to see your dentist as soon as possible for an evaluation. If the dentist doesn't feel capable of making a diagnosis or is "too" busy to see you, contact a local oral and maxillofacial surgeon to be examined. Hopefully someone can at least come up with the cause.
