This year there will be almost twenty-three thousand new cases of oral cancer in the United States.
That is according to the National Cancer Institute.
Half of those patients will die of the disease within five years, partly because it can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages.
Now, there is a new screening device that could help detect the disease earlier.
Dr. Wilfred Heilbut uses this device, the visually enhanced Lesion scope or Velscope to screen for oral cancer which he includes it as part of routine dental check ups.
