Ohio State University College of Dentistry
The Research Program for Dental Hygiene and Dentistry Students
This program serves as a focal mechanism for dentistry and dental hygiene students to be exposed to research methodology, the scientific method and the generation of new and useful knowledge. It helps students to more fully understand the processes of research, including identification of a problem, development of a hypothesis, design of experiments to test the hypothesis, collection and analysis of data, and synthesis of new findings into the greater body of existing scientific literature.
During the research experience, a student has an opportunity to work with a faculty member and to contribute to the research process. The student benefits from the opportunity to develop skills in research techniques and report writing and presentation. It is possible that the project may lead to publication or formal public presentation at a local, national or international research meeting.
The dental school was originally organized in 1890 as a department of the Ohio Medical University and was merged with Starling Medical College in 1906. In 1914, the Dental Department of Starling Ohio Medical College became the College of Dentistry of The Ohio State University and in 1925 was moved to the main campus. It has been located in the University Health Sciences Center since 1951. The Division of Dental Hygiene was established in 1944 and is now the largest university-affiliated dental hygiene program in the United States. The College of Dentistry also conducts programs of continuing education and graduate education.
The College of Dentistry building is a five-floor structure housing all administrative offices, classrooms, clinics, laboratories, and research facilities for dentistry and dental hygiene. Dental Clinics are also located in University and Children's Hospitals and in Nisonger Center. A close relationship is maintained with the colleges of Medicine and Biological Sciences and the School of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences.
