Naval Postgraduate Dental School - National Naval Medical Center
The Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS) of the National Naval Medical Center has a distinguished Research Department that coordinates and conducts dental research.
The Dental Research Laboratory, located in NNMC's historic Tower, Bldg 1, occupies over 3000 square feet to house basic science laboratories for cell biology, immunology, and microbiology, as well as a dental materials testing facility. It is co-located with the Naval Dental School and Dental Services and conducts on-site collaboration at the National Institutes of Science and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
Originally, the laboratory was a detachment of the Naval Dental Research Institute (NDRI), headquartered in Great Lakes, Illinois. NDRI is a component laboratory of the Navy Medical Research and Development Command.
In 1988, a Naval Dental Research Unit was established at Bethesda to specifically develop, coordinate and leverage the dental and basic science personnel and material assets located at the National Naval Dental Center in support of the NDRI, Great Lakes.
In 1992, Detachment Bethesda entered into a unique Memorandum of Understanding with the Medical Epidemiology and Disease Indicators Branch of the National Institute of Dental Research, National Institutes of Health. This agreement has permitted the MEDIB branch to locate in our laboratory spaces which are near the NIH campus, and to collaborate with us in cell culture, immunological, and disease indicator studies concerning head and neck cancer and periodontitis.
In 1999, the Detachment was disestablished and became a Department of the Naval Postgraduate Dental School. The agreement with MEDIB remains intact and the collaborative efforts continue.
