Medical University of South Carolina - College of Dental Medicine
Research in the Department of General Dentistry is ongoing but limited in scope. Over the years several bench top projects have been accomplished with the assistance of Dr. Draughn and the Department of Material Science. These projects have primarily been associated with shear bond strength testing of adhesives to various substrates. One of these projects was funded by the L.D. Caulk Co. Dr. Steven Davis recently received an information technologies grant to develop educational programs using an intraoral microscope, and during 1997-1998 Dr. Hook received a grant from the SC Health and Human Services Department to develop a community dental outreach program.
It is the philosophy of the Department Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina and the College of Dental Medicine to support the goals of the Medical University of South Carolina. These goals include: Education, Patient Care Service and Research.
Current research includes studies of dental restorative materials, dental and orthopedic implants and implant materials, biomedical applications of adhesive bonding processes and mechanical properties of teeth and bones. The Department maintains a materials research laboratory which supports the work of investigators in the Department, the College of Dental Medicine and other MUSC research groups. In recent years, the Department has successfully developed collaborative programs with other research groups including the MUSC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Clemson University Department of Bioengineering.
