Leeds University - Leeds Dental Institute
The Leeds Dental Institute is jointly funded by Leeds University and the United Leeds Hospitals NHS Trust. It provides education for dental undergraduate and postgraduate students, students of dental hygiene and therapy and dental auxilliary staff. It also provides routine dental care for patients in support of undergraduate training and also acts as a referral centre for specialist dental care to the population of Leeds and the surrounding region.
The Institute has a Dean/Director (Dr Margaret Kellet) and three other directors: Director of Learning and Teaching (Dr Michael Manogue), Director of Research (Professor Jennifer Kirkham) and a Clinical Director (Mr Alastair Speirs)
The Institute is divided into nine academic departments:

The Leeds Dental Institute is a joint venture combining the Dental School of the University of Leeds with the Leeds Dental Hospital, part of the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's Hospital Trust.
Aims
Research is ultimately aimed at changing clinical dental practice in the improved prevention and cure of dental and oral disease. To do this our intention is to provide a continuum of research activity from the laboratory to the clinic. Research spans a wide range of activities organised into five broad research groups representing interdisciplinary research areas and dedicated Research Clinics supported by the Health Service.
International Research
Research activities are recognised at both international and national levels.
Senior staff are represented nationally on Research Councils and internationally on British Society for Dental Research, European Organisation for Caries Research, European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry and European COST Initiative on Odontogenesis
Funding
The Institute regularly attracts funding from the Research Councils, major charities such as the Wellcome Trust, the Health Service and the European Commission, as well as major industrial concerns, for example Unilever plc, Glaxo Smith Kline, Beecham, Proctor and Gamble, GABA plc and BCCCA.
