Research Group
This group studies the complex molecular and cellular interactions involved in developmental and cellular signalling. Major fields of research include craniofacial developmental biology, evolution and odontogenesis, cell signalling and oral gene therapy. Recent investigations are being conducted in stem cells and tissue engineering for tooth regeneration. Craniofacial Developmental Biology forms the main focus of this grouping in terms of numbers of academic staff, with cell biology being a lesser component.
The Group's work is focused on the dental plaque-related diseases, caries and periodontitis. This includes basic studies of the oral microflora, host susceptibility and pathogenesis. The interaction between the oral microflora and its human host is studied at the molecular level. Clinical research undertaken includes the evaluation of diagnostic tools and new methods of treatment. Modern molecular methods, including proteomics, and mass spectrometry, are employed extensively.
