Implant Dentistry: ǃ?Return to Simplicityǃ?
Implant Dentistry: ǃ?Return to Simplicityǃ?
Dr. Gordon Christensen states that ǃ?if you are not placing and restoring dental implants in your practice, you will be behind the times.ǃ? Dr. Christensen goes on to say that he will no longer make a patient a new lower denture placing two implants. Two implants for a lower denture in his practice is the standard of care. In fact, the National Institute of Health has issued a statement that if a patient is missing one or more teeth, under options given for informed consent, the patient must be offered the option of dental implants. If the implant option is the treatment of choice, the general dentist must prefer or refer the service. This statement was issued as a consensus for a world dental heath conference held in Baltimore July 1989. There are 25 million edentulous patients, and each year there is an increase of 500,000 more. Every minute in the U.S., a patient loses a tooth. The number of implants placed is nowhere near keeping up with the potential demand. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate how general practitioners and specialists can more simply incorporate implant dentistry into their practice.
