A five-year-old girl, Diamon Brown, who was left in a coma after receiving anesthesia for a dental procedure to fill two cavities and put caps on some teeth last Saturday, has died. She stopped breathing after having the anesthesia, was placed on life-support for four days and died yesterday afternoon at 2.20 pm at the intensive care unit, Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, USA.

A hospital spokeswoman said Diamon died of her own accord "She just stopped breathing."

Family members said Diamond had been in a critical condition, had organ damage and swelling of the brain (Chicago Tribune). There will be an autopsy on Thursday to determine the cause of death.

A statement by Dr. J K Riba, Diamond's dentist, read "My family and I extend our deepest sympathies to Diamond's family. We are so sad. May God bless Diamond and her family."

Diamond received a liquid sedative, followed by nitrous oxide and intravenous sedation. She had been under sedation before when she broke her arm - on that occasion nothing went wrong.
