I have always worked closely with area dental specialists in situations requiring ǃ?extraǃ? expertise such as complex root-canal cases, Orthodontic treatment for adults as well as children, oral surgery of various kinds, and implant-retained ǃ?permanentǃ? bridgework.
Implant-retained crowns and bridgework are becoming a very popular alternative to ǃ?traditionalǃ? bridgework for replacing lost teeth. Many dentists feel as I do, that most removable partial dentures and even complete dentures have become technically obsolete since the development and refinement of dependable, predictable dental implant procedures. (Basic removable partials and full dentures still have a place as ǃ?interimǃ? solutions while implants are being planned, and also as a relatively long-term solution when economy is a primary concern.)
Most dentists find that it is helpful to plan each implant case with input from a Periodontist or Oral Surgeon with the necessary additional training in this area, and then have the actual implant placement done by that surgeon. (Most of us do these cases with a particular surgeon or two, so that we are each familiar with the other's knowledge base and skills.) The subsequent crowns or bridgework can then be done by the general practice dentist in full confidence that the implants have been properly installed and are as dependable as possible. I have two implant-retained porcelain crowns in my own mouth, so I am totally confident in the dependability of this technology.
