US company Spire Corp said it won a grant worth US$157 277 to develop functionally graded calcium phosphate coatings for dental implants. What makes these coatings different is their ability to allow rapid bone growth for initial stabilization of the implant as well as long term fixation, according to the company.
Current coating processes, involving the use of hydroxyapatite and other forms of calcium phosphate, have several drawbacks and have limited flexibility in controlling coating crystallinity.
