If there is not enough tooth structure to properly retain the prosthetic crown, the tooth requires a build-up material. A fine root filling in the tooth and no inflammation in the bone around the root are necessary prerequisites. If there is an alteration around the root apex, a replacement root filling or apicectomy (removal of root apex) may prove to be necessary.
According to the material, dowels can be
premanufactured dowels (root anchor) which are screwed into a pinhole drilled into the root canal; this will hold the crown.
cast pins prepared by the dental technician on the basis of a prepared root impression; they are made of gold or casting alloy. The pin retained in the root serves as the intraradicular anchorage or pinledge. It is perfect for alloy ceramic or gold ceramic crowns, but not possible with fully ceramic or zirconium crowns, because the colour of the pin will be seen through the material of the crown.
zirconium oxide pins may be made for zirconium crowns and full ceramic crowns. Zirconium pins are highly precise, transparent and meet aesthetic as well as biomechanic expectations.
