Preface

During the 10 years since the first edition of this book was published, there have been many advances in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery as a result of ongoing basic and clinical research, expanding technology, and changes in the scope of the specialty. Although a certain body of knowledge required for the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery remains relatively unchanged, there is a need to constantly update some of the existing information and bring new information to the attention of the reader. These have been the goals of this new edition.

To accomplish this, each chapter has been carefully reviewed and updated. Among the major additions are the recently revised American Heart Association algorithms for basic and advanced cardiac life support, which are concise and easy to understand. The chapter on commonly used medications has been extensively revised to include information on all of the new drugs that may be used by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon in treating patients, as well as about those drugs that patients may be taking for medical problems that can influence patient management. Finally, a new chapter on dental implants provides precise guidelines on the selection of appropriate implant sites for various types of dental rehabilitation.

Every effort has been made to maintain the format successfully introduced in the previous edition, which offers quick access to information that may be needed in situations that do not allow time for a leisurely perusal of textbooks and journals. Thus, this book should continue to serve both trainees and practitioners as a valuable way to obtain answers to urgent questions that arise during treatment, as well as an organized resource for review of the material essential for board certification and the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

We wish to again express our sincere appreciation to the numerous contributors who have helped make this new edition possible. Their diligent efforts in refining and updating their material are clearly reflected in the pages of this book.
