The majority of Consultant appointments are based in dental teaching hospitals. Many are Senior Academics holding an honorary Consultant contract. Attention has been drawn to the important role which Consultants in Restorative Dentistry are able to fulfil within the hospital service but in spite of the recognition of their contribution, the establishment of Consultant appointments in Restorative Dentistry in district general hospitals has been slow and access to the service in the UK varies widely.
Many Consultants in Restorative Dentistry provide a broad comprehensive service but others, in particular those in academic departments, tend to have a particular interest in a speciality within Restorative Dentistry and take a prominent part in the activities of specialist societies, nationally and internationally. The mono-specialities of Restorative Dentistry have recently been recognised by the General Dental Council; they are Periodontology, Endodontics and Prosthodontics. In due course these services will become more widely available in the UK but currently they are privately funded and are unlikely to be available in NHS practice.
