The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is the not-for-profit professional association serving the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, the surgical arm of dentistry.
Founded in 1918, AAOMS currently has an affiliation base of more than 7,000 fellows, members and residents in the United States, as well as 250 affiliate members from nations around the world. More than 90% of oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States belong to AAOMS. In addition to its membership, AAOMS boasts state component societies in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and eight regional component societies.
Major activities include monthly publication of the renowned Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; the AAOMS Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition, attended by approximately 5,000 people each year; the dental implant conference; hands-on skills courses; office assistant clinical educational programs; practice management programs; educational and research activities; programs to support professional issues such as hospital privileging and anesthesia; advocacy; comprehensive government relations; and communications programs.
AAOMS is governed by an 11-member Board of Trustees composed of five officers, including the president, president-elect, vice president, treasurer and immediate past president, and six trustees, each of whom represents a geographic membership district. AAOMS' executive director serves as board secretary in an ex-officio capacity. The Speaker of the House of Delegates is also an officer of the Association.
Related organizations formed by the specialty include the OMS Foundation (OMSF), established in 1959; the OMS Political Action Committee (OMSPAC), established in 1971; and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), which was established in 1946.
